HOLLYWOOD—The Golden Globes officially started the 2017 awards season, which we all know will last until the Academy Awards. Hollywood’s biggest stars shined bright in this season’s major trend-sequins.

There was a lot of pink, a very popular color. Zoe Zaldana looked pretty in pink, along with Felicity Jones and Lily Collins. The emergence of yellow was a surprise color from Emily Ratajkowski’s in Reem Acra to a pregnant Natalie Portman embellished Prada gown, an obvious homage to Jackie O-the character who earned her a Best Actress nomination. Another yellow ray of sunshine was Viola Davis. Nicole Kidman in an Alexander McQueen gown, and who could resist Sofia Vergara’s Zuhair Murad number.

Then we have the ladies that wore the graphics, like Janelle Monae in a black and white palette in Armani. Standing tall in Georges Chakra, “Veep,” star Julia Louis-Dreyfus in a star in stripes forever. Then we saw the beautiful bold shoulder gowns, like Drew Barrymore, in 1930s style Monique Lhullier. Sarah Jessica Parker in a Vera Wang gown, pays tribute to recently departed Hollywood star Carrie Fisher with a Princess Leia-worthy up-do.

The golden rule of any awards show is not to bring politics to the table. I continually mention in the awards season, to both actors and actresses to make sweet, to-the heart speeches. Meryl Streep blasted President-Elect Donald Trump while accepting the Cecil B. DeMille Award on the Golden Globes stage at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on January 8. Streep, a big supporter of Hilary Clinton and President Obama, went on a long, impassioned rant against Trump.

She claimed Hollywood stars and the media belong to “the most vilified segments in American society,” then recalled Trumps apparent mockery of a disabled journalist named Serge Kovaleski. Yet, no speech about what happened in Chicago about the hate crime, after four thugs tied up and tortured a disabled man on Facebook Live. Every president or president-elect should be treated with respect and not bring personal feelings or opinions to the awards show. In between the politics, awards were handed out to some of the top movies and TV shows. If this is any indication on politics in Awards show we will be in for some interesting entertainment.

Already actor Tom Hiddleston has apologized. He realized that his Golden Globes acceptance speech wasn’t that great, saying that it had been “inelegantly expressed.” The statement was released on Facebook. Tom also paid tribute to Carrie Fisher. “[Carrie Fisher] was such a force for life. If we can take anything, a lesson from her is to live as fully as we can, to embrace our weaknesses and that very act makes them become strengths,” he said.

From Hollywood to Zurich, Portuguese superstar soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo won the FIFA best player award for the fourth time. Ronaldo won his fourth trophy on January 9. The double European champion with Portugal and Real Madrid beat another great rival Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann to complete a sweep of top individual awards.

“It was a year that was magnificent at a personal level and at a sporting level,” the 31-year-old Ronaldo said in Portuguese during his acceptance speech. He began his speech by exclaiming, “Wow, wow, wow.”

Ronaldo’s win closed the gap on five-time winner Messi, who has been the runner-up to each Ronaldo victory. His victories included the European Championship, Champions League, and Club World Cup, plus individual best player awards from UEFA and France Football magazine. FIFA made its Fair Play Award to Atlectico Nacional, the Columbian club which was scheduled to host Chapecoense in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana final on November 30. After most of the Brazilian team died in a plane crash flying to the match, Atletico Nacional asked the South American soccer confederation to present the title and trophy to Chapecoense.
