HOLLYWOOD—It was a very busy weekend at the box-office, but the newcomers were no battle for a previous box-office champion. “The Martian” rose to the number one spot earning $15.9 million. The space adventurer just barely out-grossed last week’s champion “Goosebumps” which fell to second place with $15.5 million. After nearly 4 weekends in theaters “The Martian” has crossed the $150 million mark at the domestic box-office.

Landing in third place was Steven Spielberg’s “Bridge of Spies” with an impressive $11.4 million. The word of mouth buzz for the drama looks quite strong. Nabbing fourth place was the new release “The Last Witch Hunter” starring Vin Diesel with $10.8 million. Considering Halloween is less than a week away, one would have expected audiences to look for more scares in theaters.

Rounding out the top five was the animation flick “Hotel Transylvania 2” which is still holding on strong after more than a month in theaters with another $9 million to its tally. Failing to crack into the top five was the sixth installment in the “Paranormal Activity” franchise, “Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension” with $8.2 million. This could be the result of a load of theater chains refusing to show the flick. In addition, it could be the factor that audiences are feeling a bit of fatigue from the series that hasn’t proved to be as effective since its first outing.

Halloween weekend will be interesting in theaters as the festive holiday falls on a Saturday this year. With only the cooking drama “Burnt” starring Bradley Cooper opening, there is no telling who will rise to the top.
