UNITED STATES—It was the event that has been talked about for months, and I mean that literally. All I’ve seen on the news stations, in magazines, on the internet is the impending nuptials between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. I mean I was so happy for May 19 to come and go, because we no longer have to hear about it. Now, this is not to take anything away from the couple. To be honest I am thrilled to see such an event transpire in my lifetime, however, I do not want to hear about it 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There are so many other things transpiring in our country today that have bigger significance that we need to pay attention to.

Now, I know plenty of you are thinking this is going to be a column that will bash the Royal Wedding, but you’re wrong. I actually wanted to discuss it slightly because I couldn’t help, but get caught up in the love affair that transpired all over the local TV stations and many of the Cable networks, I mean even HBO had coverage of the event. And dare I say it was an actual event. I got up a bit late Saturday morning; there was no way in hell I was getting up at 5 a.m. to watch a wedding on TV. If it was my wedding that is another thing, but it was not.

It seems the royals know how to put on a show because the lavish coverage of this event left me in awe. Why? The church, the procession, witnessing the exchange of vows between Harry and Meghan; shall I continue? Of course, that sermon that was presented by Bishop Michael Curry was rousing and struck you to the core. I mean not only did everyone in attendance go to church on Saturday, May 19; America went to Church while sitting in front of their TV screen. Wow, that is the only ‘word’ I can use to describe what I witnessed. I guess I could choose more words, but just trying to elaborate on the issues discussed and the emotions evoked would not do justice in my personal opinion.

What perhaps captivated my attention more was watching Harry and Meghan make their journey throughout Windsor. I mean people were out in throws and I mean that literally and figuratively to get a glimpse of the happy couple. I know for many it was more a moment because we may never see anything like this in the future where an American actress, one who happens to be biracial get married into royalty. I mean that was something discussed a lot by Bishop Curry about the importance of love and how it transcends all things. Being a fan of the TV series “Suits,” I love Markle as an actress and to see her look so happy amidst all the turmoil was a moment.

I mean jeez, what the hell was going on with her family last week? It felt like so many family members wanted to take this happy occasion away from her. I mean the back-and-forth issue with rather her father Thomas would or would not walk her down the aisle, to her sister bashing her, to other family members crashing the shindig without actually being invited, should I continue? Of course not, I think it just added elevated intrigue to Americans who were on the fence about watching the actual wedding transpire on live TV.

Without a doubt that has to be unnerving. It is one thing to have everyone in the room watching you, but can you imagine having everyone in the room watching you and millions of people across the world watching you exchange your vows and profess your love to your significant other? I couldn’t; I would be so anxious I might have an anxiety attack, but Harry and Meghan handled all the stress without a hiccup.

I’m glad I caught a few glimpses of the event; it was a moment, something that probably will not be seen again in most of our lifetimes. And as an African-American man to witness someone like Meghan, who comes from humble beginnings accomplish so MUCH, I’m absolutely proud and wish her and Harry the absolute best as they spend the rest of their lives together.
