HOLLYWOOD—The dresses have been donned, the winners have been announced, the champagne has been sipped, and so the Oscars are officially over. This year’s telecast was supposed to appeal to a younger demographic by enlisting co-hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway. The problem with the show’s co-hosts was that the personalities were a bit mismatched: Anne’s bubbly, energized, “Woo!” personality clashed with Franco’s laid back, “Come what may,” personality. The chemistry just wasn’t there between the two.

The first award of the night went to Melissa Leo. Her acceptance speech was one of the surprises for the night as she uttered the F-bomb, which was immediately bleeped. It was a bit awkward, just like when Kirk Douglas was reluctant to relinquish the microphone and leave the stage. However, it was a brilliant, unscripted moment of the Oscars that was funny and brought nostalgia to the show. Sometimes the Academy forgets that the Oscars need to be fun for the viewers; afterall, they are the ones adding to the ratings.

In the season of awards, mostly thanks to the Globes and Sags, we pretty much knew or suspected who would win. Of course, if you’re sitting in the audience, the Oscars were great; however, if you’re a viewer it’s simply boring to have to listen to all the technical winners.

So how do we fix the Oscars for 2012? Bring out the “legends.” I know there are plenty of icons in town such as Debbie Reynolds, Ruta Lee, Phyllis Diller, Elizabeth Taylor and Clint Eastwood just to name a few. Let’s remember who the real comedians are—Billy Crystal and Robin Williams. They have real talent.

Speaking of talent, we bumped into “Dancing with the Stars” two-time champion Cheryl Burke when she was on tour for her book, “Dancing Lessons,” on February 16. In her poignant memoir, we learn that Cheryl began dancing at the age of 4, and she would stick to her goals by dancing. We had the opportunity to ask Cheryl some questions:

CN: Best celebrity you have worked with?

CB: “I have worked with 10 so far, each of them have something special. I would have to say Emmitt Smith.”

CN: What about the controversy of voting?

CB: “It’s perfect the way it is, it gives you guys a voice, 50 percent for the judges and 50 percent to you.”

CN: Derek Hough is so cute.

CB: “Yes he is, he’s like a little brother to me, a very nice person.”

CN: Is he leaving?

CB: “No, just taking a break. He will be back next season. He promises.”

CN: Do you pick your own partner?

CB: “No, it’s not up to me, it’s the casting director. She meets with them, gets a bio and then they practice.”

CN: If you had to pick your own partner, who would it be?

CB: “Roger Federer.”

CN: Do you get a personal connection with your partners?

CB: “Most of us stay friends, after three months we are sick of each other, take a break and then stay in touch again, e-mail each other. I stay in touch with Emmitt.”

Cheryl would not divulge the cast before it was announced. The 12th season of “DWTS” will premiere on March 21. Joining the cast is Kirstie Alley, Kendra Wilkinson, Ralph Macchio, Sugar Ray Leonard, Wendy Williams, Hines Ward, Petra Nemcova, Chelsea Kane, Mike Catherwood, Romeo and Chris Jericho.

Rose’s Scoop: Christina Aguilera is not starting the year on a good note. Aguilera was pulled over and taken into custody for suspicion of DUI in West Hollywood on March 1. Special birthday wishes go out to my mom, who’ll be celebrating her birthday bash in style on March 6.
