BEVERLY HILLS—A car accident occurred at Loma Vista Drive and Robert Lane at approximately 8:00 a.m. on Friday, March 7 that resulted in the fatality of an officer. A truck traveling southbound collided with a Hollywood Division LAPD patrol car who was responding to an unspecified call in the city of Los Angeles.

The victims in the crash were transported to hospitals to be treated for their injuries. LAPD Officer Nicholas Lee was killed during the accident. A Rosary Service was held on Wednesday, March 12 at St. Basil Catholic Church and a Memorial Service was held on Thursday, March 13 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Los Angels. Officer Lee was laid to rest on Thursday, March 13 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, CA.

The city of Beverly Hills and the city of Los Angeles flew their flags at half-staff to honor the deceased officer on March 7.

According to Sgt. Max Subin of the BHPD, the investigation includes multiple agencies including the Beverly Hills Police Department, Beverly Hills Fire Department, Los Angeles Police Department and the California Highway Patrol. The area surrounding Loma Vista (adjacent to Beverly Hills Greystone
Park and Mansion) was closed during the day as the investigation continued.

LAPD Assistant Chief Earl C. Paysinger tweeted that he had recently visited Lee’s surviving partner, saying that “she’s coming along slowly but well.”  She was released from the hospital on March 8.

Chief of Police Charlie Beck said in a televised statement on the day of the crash that a preliminary investigation showed that the truck’s brakes may have failed. “Nick was a great cop,” said Chief Beck.  “His hard work, dedication, and leadership helped mold young police officers into law enforcement professionals.”

According to the LAPD, Officer Lee was a 16 year veteran of the force, having served in Van Nuys, Wilshire and in the Hollywood Division, where he worked just prior to his death.  In his time as a police officer, he received over 70 commendations for his service.  He leaves behind a wife and two daughters.

Tyler Izen, President of the Los Angeles Police Protective League, said in a statement, “The officer’s death is a tragic loss that reminds us of the risks that law enforcement officers take every day to keep our community safe.” A Blue Ribbon Trust account has been opened at the Los Angeles Police Federal Credit Union.  For information on how to donate, the credit union can be reached at 877-695-2732.

Lt. Lincoln Hoshino of the BHPD informed Canyon News via email that the California Highway Patrol is currently handling the investigation.
