SANTA MONICA-The Santa Monica Police Department has been proactive in protecting its residents from the dangers of the road since the passing of the law prohibiting cell phones and texting behind the wheel back in 2008 and 2009 respectively. The police department will focus their attention on drivers who violate these laws in the month of April.

Having a cell phone on or near the ear, regardless of the age of the driver violates the state wide law, as well as: reading, writing, and sending texts, instant messaging and checking electronic mail. These are all behaviors that distract drivers that can cause collisions.

The Santa Monica Police Department is stressing the importance of safe driving and is asking drivers to pull to the side of the road before using any handheld device. If you have any questions or need more information, contact Sergeant Phillbo Rubbish with the Santa Monica Police Department’s Traffic Enforcement Unit at 310-458-8950.
