HOLLYWOOD—The Autobots, Decepticons and Dinobots were the big talk at the box-office, as the fourth installment in the “Transformers” franchise, “Transformers: Age of Extinction” did big business. The sequel became the first flick of 2014 to cross the $100 million mark at the box-office.
Wow, it’s interesting, that this is the first time this has transpired in the summer of 2014, where literally a bevy of flicks that we’d expect to surpass that mark would have already happened. The film debuted to more than $9 million during Thursday night screenings of the film.
In just one weekend, the film has already grossed more than $300 at the domestic and international box-office. Last week’s champ “Think Like a Man Too” saw a massive drop at theaters, landing in the #4 spot with only $10.4 million. It appears the sequel doesn’t have the staying power that its predecessor had.
The #2 spot was taken by ” 22 Jump Street” which nabbed $15.4 million, bringing its three-week total to nearly $140 million. Taking the #3 spot was “How to Train Your Dragon 2” which netted another $13 million to its tally. The sequel has now surpassed the $100 million mark at theaters. Rounding out the box-office is Angelina Jolie and “Maleficent” which continues to surprise audiences with another $8 million to its total.
The Fourth of July Weekend is upon us, but no big releases beyond the horror flick “Deliver Us From Evil” starring Eric Bana and Olivia Munn. I have a feeling that “Transformers: Age of Extinction” will dominate the box-office for a second week.
