SANTA MONICA—At 4:30 p.m. Monday, October 27, a water main rupture near the busy Hollywood intersection of Santa Monica and Highland temporarily closed traffic, heightening concerns regarding the maintenance and reliability of the Los Angeles plumbing network.

With the pipe repaired, the intersection re-opened on Tuesday, October 28, but the pipe burst in a section east of the original rupture.

To avoid further liability or damage, the northbound portion of Highland Avenue and the eastbound portion of Santa Monica Boulevard have remained closed until the second breakage is fixed.

The rupture is the second major plumbing failure in three months, the first being the July water main burst on Sunset Boulevard that flooded the UCLA campus, where more than 10 million gallons of water were lost according to reports.
