WEST HOLLYWOOD—The City of West Hollywood will host a celebration for the launch of the new evening and nighttime curb zones called The Drop. According to the city of West Hollywood website, the Drop is an innovative program that establishes designated areas for pick-ups and drop-offs, which provides convenience for people who use ride share services, such as Uber and Lyft. It is the first-of-its-kind program in the region. San Francisco and Washington, D.C. have spearheaded similar ride share curb zone programs.

The event for The Drop will take place on Thursday, March 15 at 5:45 p.m. at The Abbey Food & Bar, located at 692 N. Robertson Boulevard. Members of the West Hollywood City Council will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a community reception will follow with light refreshments. The event is free and open to everyone. No RSVP is required. Representatives from Uber and Lyft will be at the event.

“The Drop makes so much sense. We want to make it as easy as possible for people to enjoy everything the City of West Hollywood has to offer,” said City of West Hollywood Councilmember Lindsey P. Horvath. “With the rapid increase in use of ride share services, we’re proud to be among the first cities in the nation exploring innovative ways to provide added convenience that helps mobility and, ultimately, gets people to where they want to go.”

The Drop launch on Thursday, March 15, will serve as a pilot program with 12 curb zones located throughout the city of West Hollywood in areas that experience a high volume of ride share use during evenings and nights. Additional locations will be added to the program as feedback is assessed. Curb zones marked The Drop are free, convenient areas for people to be picked up or dropped off by ride share drivers between 6 p.m. and 3 a.m. Drivers are not permitted to park or stage in The Drop curb zones.

The goal of The Drop is to highlight issues regarding congested bike and traffic lanes and double-parking in the region.
