WEST HOLLYWOOD—With rising temperatures across Southern California this week, there will be a Heat Advisory in effect from Tuesday, June 20 at 11 a.m. to Wednesday, June 21 at 9 p.m., according to the U.S. National Weather Service.

West Hollywood has activated a Cooling Center at the Plummer Park’s Community Center Senior Lounge, located at 7377 Santa Monica Boulevard, according to a press release from the city. The center opened on Monday, June 19 and will remain in operation through Thursday, June 22, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. It will remain open for additional days if high temperatures continue.

Residents and community members are encouraged to take precautions to keep as cool as possible on hot days, as higher temperatures can make the weather dangerous. High heat can cause heat cramps or heat exhaustion. The city reminds residents to stay out of the sun, avoid strenuous activity, replenish with plenty of water, and wear loose, lightweight clothing.

Pets and children are especially vulnerable to high-heat conditions. On a 78-degree day, the temperature inside a parked vehicle can rise to 120 degrees in mere minutes. On a 90-degree day, the interior temperature can rise up to 160 degrees in less than 10 minutes.

The Cooling Center is available for quiet activities, and people are welcome to bring books or board games. Staff members at Plummer Park are available to direct people to the Senior Lounge.

The city provides free transportation to Plummer Park through its CityLine service, an ADA-accessible alternative to the larger bus system. The system operates Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and shuttles arrive approximately every 30 minutes. Additional information and a route map are available at www.weho.org/cityline. Route maps are also available on CityLine shuttles and at West Hollywood City Hall, at 8300 Santa Monica Boulevard.
