WEST HOLLYWOOD—On Wednesday, October 3, the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Department will hold a Drug Take Back Day. The event will take place between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. at 780 N San Vicente Blvd. in the front parking lot.

The Sheriff’s Department will be accepting unused or expired prescription medicines for safe disposal. Only pills will be accepted. No liquids, aerosols, pill bottles, or medication blister cards will be accepted.

The goal of Drug Take Back Day is to promote public safety and public health for the community. By providing a safe drop off location, the city can attempt to curb the spreading of prescription medicines. The majority of abuse to prescription drugs comes from family and friends. When medications are improperly disposed they can end up in water or waste systems where children, animals, and others can be unintentionally harmed.

According to the 2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 6.4 million Americans abused controlled prescription drugs.

According to the Drug Enforcement Administration website, the Drug Disposal Act was passed in 2010. It was designed to encourage public and private entities to develop a variety of methods of collection and disposal in a secure and convenient, and responsible manner
