LOS ANGELES—The Los Angeles Lakers snapped their three-game winning streak, losing to the Dallas Mavericks 109-97 on Tuesday, November 8.

The Mavericks have been decimated by early season injuries, with starters Dirk Nowitzki and Deron Williams sitting the game out due to soreness. Forward Harrison Barnes has surged in their absence, averaging 22.3 points per game and dropping 31 on the Lakers at Staples Center on Tuesday night.

“I’m just being aggressive,” Barnes said after the game. “That was the biggest thing in my first few games with the Mavs, figuring out when to be aggressive and when not to. You just kind of have to leave the switch on, and if you fail, fail aggressively.”

Dallas point guard J.J. Barea stunned the Lakers’ defense, scoring 18 points and grabbing 7 rebounds and 8 assists. Seth Curry added 23 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists while coming off of the bench for the Mavericks in their second win of the season.

Los Angeles failed to take care of the basketball, coughing up a whopping 17 turnovers in their fourth loss of the season. Lakers head coach Luke Walton was complimentary of Barnes, who he coached for two seasons as an assistant in Golden State.

“Harrison was pretty spectacular tonight,” said Walton after the loss. “Seth Curry coming off of the bench was huge. I thought we played a little soft in the first half. When you let good players get into a rhythm, it can be tough to shut them down.”

Jordan Clarkson led the Lakers offensively with 22 points off of the bench. Nick Young scored 20 points, including 13 straight to start the game, drawing voracious roars from an enthusiastic Staples Center crowd. Julius Randle claimed his second double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

The Lakers are now 4-4, tying the Memphis Grizzlies for the eighth seed in the Western Conference. Los Angeles will begin a three-game road trip with a matchup against the Sacramento Kings on Thursday, November 10.
