HOLLYWOOD—Rise of the Planet of the Apes” was a critical hit and wowed viewers, so it was no surprise that the sequel “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” took the #1 spot at the box-office. The sci-fi adventure exceeded expectations and brought in more than $73 million.

The film surpassed its predecessor by at least $20 million. I am surprised the film didn’t bring in higher numbers at the box-office; I suspect hopefully a $100 million debut for “Dawn” considering buzz the film was receiving.

Falling to the #2 spot was the flick “Transformers: Age of Extinction” taking in another $16.5 million to its total. After three weeks in theaters, the robots have already crossed the $200 million mark at the domestic box-office.

Grabbing the #3 spot was the Melissa McCarthy comedy “Tammy” with a little over $12 million to its tally. The film only fell about 50 percent in its second week. So far the comedy has grossed over $57 million domestically. Comedy is still strong at the box-office, with “

22 Jump Street” landing in the fourth spot with $6.7 million. After five weeks, the sequel has amounted over $170 domestically. Rounding out the top five is the animated film “How to Train a Dragon 2” with an additional $5.8 million.

Next week we see another sequel and the first horror flick of the summer with “The Purge: Anarchy.”  Can the sequel to the movie that surprised audiences a year ago do big business again? We’ll have to wait and see.
