HOLLYWOOD—Buzz hit the Internet about a year ago that a possible return of the “Scream” franchise could be coming to the small screen in 2014.  Well, to those fans of the horror franchise, “Scream” is heading to MTV. When I first heard about this back in 2013, I had mixed feelings.

With that being said a cast for the upcoming series and a director for the pilot were announced on Tuesday, August 5. Joining the cast is Willa Fitzgerald from “Royal Pains,” Amy Forsyth “Reign,” John Karna “Neighbors,” Carlson Young “The Kroll Show” and newcomer Amadeus Serafini.  The series is being directed by Jamie Travis, and written by Jay Beattie and Dan Dworkin.  Jill Blotevogel will executive produce and serve as a showrunner for the series.

Can a horror story work on the small screen? In some aspects yes, others no; I mean its network television it’s not like this is HBO or Showtime where there are no limits. There is indeed a limit to what can and what can’t be shown.

The series is not expected to be a direct rip from the 1996 hit which reinvigorated the horror genre as we know it with its aspect of meta-humor, as it poked fun about all the silliness in the genre itself. Fitzgerald is set to portray the title role of Emma Duvall, who has recently become a member of the “in crowd” at school, and grapples with her estranged relationship with her best friend Audrey, portrayed by Forsyth.

Based on the character descriptions the series might be looking to delve into some new territory, in hopes of revamping the franchise, leading to a possible (fingers crossed) “Scream 5” which could end the series on an explosive note. I mean let’s face it “Scream 4” was not as critically successful as so many of us had hoped for after a nearly decade long absence.
