HOLLYWOOD—I always love it, when the box-office predictors get it wrong. This weekend showcased an interesting surprise as the action-thriller “The Maze Runner” debuted to more than $32 million to take the top spot. The movie, which is an adaptation of the James Dashner book and stars “Teen Wolf” star Dylan O’Brien. With strong word of mouth buzz, the movie could find itself topping the box-office next week as well. Note: a sequel is already been given a green light.
Falling into the #2 spot was the Liam Neeson thriller “A Walk Among the Tombstones” that opened to a dismal $13 million. Many were expecting the flick to debut to larger numbers. With such a low debut, it’ll be safe to say that perhaps “Tombstones” won’t last long in theaters. The Tina Fey dramedy “This is Where I Leave You” debuted in the #3 spot with just under $12 million.
Last week’s box-office champ “No Good Deed” fell to the #4 spot adding just over $10 million to its total, while “Dolphin Tale 2” capped the top five with $9 million. This weekend sees the return of Oscar-winner Denzel Washington in the action flick “The Equalizer.”
