HOLLYWOOD—It appears those funny birds from “ Rio 2” weren’t enough to claim the top spot at the box-office this weekend. In perhaps one of the closet battles so far this year, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” held onto the #1 spot at the box-office bringing in a little over $41 million. In only two weeks, the comic book flick has already raked in more than $170 million domestically.
In a close second, was the sequel “ Rio 2” with just over $39 million. This is an interesting turn out for the animated flick which many expected to claim the top spot from “Captain America.” The flick’s predecessor also ranked in about $39 million during its debut at the box-office in 2011. Surprising audiences this weekend was the horror flick “Oculus” which debuted with a spooky $12 million. With a budget around $5 million, it’s apparent that “Oculus” is a box-office hit and has already recouped its budget, so a potential sequel could be in the works.
The football drama “Draft Day” starring Kevin Costner didn’t have the strongest showing, with a modest $9.5 million take. Perhaps the movie would have done much better opening at the start of football season. Rounding out the top five was the action-flick “Divergent” with an additional $7.5 million. It’s possible “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” could claim the throne a third week at the box-office. This week sees two new releases, the sci-fi thriller “Transcendence” starring Johnny Depp and the comedy “A Haunted House 2.”
