HOLLYWOOD—The return of serial killer Dexter Morgan immediately following his beloved wife Rita’s murder by the trinity killer was exciting and chilling. Dexter has already resumed his murderous killing spree, to the shock of fans and their delight of the return of the hit Showtime series. Michael C. Hall defeated cancer over his short hiatus and he’s also returned in top form both physically and creatively in the role. His character was always a monster, who Rita managed to camouflage, but now that she’s gone, the character has no one to curb his bloodlust and diabolical nature.

His initial reaction to finding his wife dead in her bathtub and then making the 911 call seemed to pique the interest of his co-workers and has brought him to the attention of the FBI. His inability initially to grieve just did not seem normal to people around him. He’d lied to his kids who were at Disneyworld in Orlando with their grandparents, that Rita was unavailable to take their calls. When they all returned home and found out that she’d been brutally murdered, Dexter’s blunt and almost standoffish demeanor only seemed to infuriate his kids. His daughter publicly wished that he was dead instead of her mother, her grandparents asked, how he could keep such horrific and tragic news from them and the kids for over 24 hours.

Dexter’s visit to the funeral home was also very odd. The only person who seemed unaware of his odd behavior was his sister, who eventually joined the chorus of “What is going on with Dexter?” His first refusal to attend Rita’s funeral was shocking to all. Then when he finally showed up very late, he gave a moving eulogy, that actually only implicated him in his wife’s death in the minds of FBI agents who stood nearby listening for his words.

The best scene of the night was when he welcomed his kids home, and his son quickly put a Mickey Mouse hat on Dexter’s head, while he worked on the words and emotions to break the news to them that their mother had indeed been murdered. “I’m sorry for your loss,” in an emphatic and distant manner seemed odd to his kids and their grandparents. Though for viewers who are in on the fact that the character is a monster serial killer, it made perfect sense that he has removed his own grief from his emotions.

The only emotional breakdown for Dexter came when he cornered a roughneck guy in the men’s room of a dive bar, then proceeded to murder him. The specter of his dead father cheering him on, then advising him to return home was well written. In fact, the entire episode was very well written and acted. Fans of the hit show are called “Dexperts” by Showtime Television. Many are excited about the debut of season five.

The episode was titled “My Bad.” However, there was very little bad news for Dextperts. Jesus Romero posted on the official “Dexter” Facebook page, “Awesome! I can hardly wait until next week, to see the next chapter.” Kevin Van Dyken stated, “Everyone ready for ”˜Dexter’ tonight? I renewed my subscription with Showtime this week, just for this. It’s important.” Mary Ramey concluded, “I love ”˜True Blood,’ but this show is so much better.” Also fans are speculating on the possible murder of his arch-enemy Quinn by Dexter. Quinn is becoming very suspicious of Dexter’s odd behavior and next week starts to stalk his nemesis to find out if he’s in fact connected to the murders by the illusive Kyle Butler.

“Dexter” airs on Showtime at 9 p.m. on Sunday nights.
