SANTA MONICA—The Santa Monica Police Department are searching for the suspect who robbed a Wells Fargo Bank located at 900 Montana Avenue on Tuesday, September 10. The SMPD indicated in a press release to Canyon News that at approximately 9:51 a.m. officers responded to a call about an armed robbery.

The suspect who was heavily dressed in dark clothing consisting of a hoodie, gloves and a white “Day of the Dead” type of mask entered the establishment with a long barreled weapon and demanded money. The suspect got away with between three to five thousand dollars. The robber was seen jumping a wall to the rear of the bank in the 800 block of 9th Street. Officers arrived on the scene within minutes and set up a perimeter based on information provided by witnesses and residents in the region. Lt. Cobarrubias of the SMPD spoke with Canyon News via email about the armed robbery.

“The investigation is ongoing and detectives are conducting follow up today [Wednesday, September 11].

However, there is nothing to indicate the suspect had an accomplice but the investigation is fluid so that can change. We are working with the FBI who is reaching out to LAPD and LASD Robbery Divisions to see if they have had any incidents involving a similar suspect description. “

Lt. Cobarrubias informed Canyon News that this was the first robbery in Santa Monica involving this type of suspect description.

Authorities were not able to locate the suspect. There were no reports of any injuries during the incident. The SMPD is working with the Federal Bureau of Investigations to identify the suspect.
