CALIFORNIA—Officers from the Santa Ana Police Department shot and killed an armed man on Sunday, March 1, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church located at 1100 S. Center St., near McFadden Avenue.

According to authorities, the incident occurred after an officer patrolling the area was flagged down at 4:20 p.m. He was notified by church members attending service at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, that a man inside the church had a gun. Back up was called to ensure the safety of all individuals inside the establishment.

The officer found the suspect inside the church with the gun and a shooting transpired. After shots were fired, the suspect ran outside of the church with his weapon in tow before falling to the ground. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The name of the suspect has not yet been disclosed to the public.

According to reports, no details on the total number of shots fired have been disclosed to the public until the notification of next of kin. Authorities are currently investigating if the suspect fired at officers or threatened them before shots were fired.

The Santa Ana PD tweeted:

“This was an isolated incident & NOT intended for mass casualty. This incident was NOT a faith-based attack; Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church is a safe place to worship.
The defendent was discovered with a firearm, no other witnesses or officers were injured in this incident.”
