VERMONT—During a board meeting at The Vermont Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, the Board of Directors decided that they would close down the Austine School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and the Williams Center in June.

The VCDHH President Bill Gurney told Canyon News that the main reason the school closed down was due to low student enrollment. When asked what would happen to students who were previously enrolled or attempting to enroll Gurney indicated that they would move to residential schools, while other students are currently going to graduate.

According to Gurney, the school played a big role to the students and parents of the school and, “has run since 1908 and served thousands of students and their families. Many consider Austine their home while growing up.” However, Gurney hopes to re-open the school with plans for “on campus residential and academic programs running in July of 2016.”
