HOLLYWOOD—The train wreck that is the Ashley/Jared/Caila love triangle resumed this week and nearly destroyed one of Paradise’s power couples (Jared and Caila), but night one presented a beam of hope amid the rampant emotions that could potentially bring an end to the unbelievably repetitive drama: Wells.

Bachelor Nation’s favorite dork, Wells Adams, 31 – a Radio DJ from Nashville, TN and “The Bachelorette” season 12 (JoJo), arrives and the other contestants are ecstatic to see him—and not because of his delightful wit and humility.

Wells serves as a sacrifice – the gang actively persuades him to ask out Ashley and as Nick so accurately phrases it, “for paradise and humanity to continue—this date needs to happen.” Wells summons the contestants to gather around the pool area, where he reads off his date card and asks out… Ashley! A roar of applause and cheering erupts; Wells asks Ashley, “Is that how it always is?”—no. The answer is no.

Wells takes Ashley out for a night of taco eating and lantern flying, while back at “Paradise,” Jared and Caila are finally immersing themselves in some much needed one-on-one time. This gives Caila an opportunity to escape the looming baggage that is Ashley I. and realize she could potentially fall in love with Jared and his “silly, quirky, goofy, comfy” personality.

In the moments leading up to the rose ceremony, Paradise’s most solid couples retreat to secluded areas where they validate each other’s mutual feelings: Evan tell Carly he’s falling in love with her and Carly tells Evan she’s falling in love with him; Josh tells Amanda he’s falling in love with her and Amanda tells Josh she’s falling in love with him.

The 17 remaining contenders comprise six somewhat stable couples, rendering only Haley and Emily’s roses available and leaving Ryan, Carl and Daniel to compete for their affection. Last week, Haley went on a date with Ryan and Emily with Carl—giving them the upper hand.

Carly gives her rose to Evan; Ashley I. gives her rose to Wells; Jen gives hers to long-term “Paradise” boyfriend, Nick; Izzy gives hers to new flame, Brett; Caila gives hers to boyfriend, Jared; Amanda gives her rose to day-one boyfriend, Josh; then Haley drops a bomb—and rather than handing out her rose, she invites Emily up to the front.

Haley addresses the group, “As you guys know, Emily and I came here to find love – we’ve been here for five weeks now and unfortunately, we can’t say that it would be fair to pass on our roses this week.” Adding, “we came in this together and we want to leave together.” The twin’s decision to leave “Paradise” renders their roses unavailable and resultantly eliminates Ryan, Carl and Daniel – a truly tragic rose ceremony.

Wells and Jami.

The next morning a new bachelorette arrives and shatters Ashley I.’s short lived happiness; Jami Letain, 24, a Bartender from Calgary, AB and “The Bachelor” season 20 (Ben), arrives to find only Wells in “Paradise.” Being that they’re the only two around, they get to talking and Jami is so smitten that she doesn’t even want to meet anyone else – she invites Wells on her date and he accepts; they leave before Ashley even wakes up.

Mid-afternoon, Ashley stumbles onto the beach – Nick and Jen call her over to break the news about Wells and she’s surprisingly “fine.” But no one’s buying it—and rightfully so. Ashley returns to her old habits—pretty much immediately—and initiates yet another uncomfortably passive aggressive conversation with Caila about her relationship with Jared.

Ashley tells her, “I don’t need you guys flaunting anything around me – but I don’t care if you hold hands, or kiss, or whatever, just don’t like—full on make out in front of me, especially if Jami and Wells come back as a pair.” She adds, “But if I have Wells—I think I’m totally fine.”

Upon their conversation, Caila makes the decision to leave “Paradise;” amid tears, she says, “I’m not going to be able to continue this relationship in Paradise. I don’t feel comfortable whatsoever.” She adds, “there’s so much baggage involved—and it’s walking around with red lipstick.” Caila tells Jared she’s leaving and he chases after her; then, they’re chauffeured off into the sunset and say “goodbye” to “Paradise.”

Later that night, Wells and Jami return from their date and Wells pulls Ashley aside because he “owe[s] her a conversation”; he’s honest about his date with Jami and tells Ashley they had an “incredible” time—and she’s weirdly cool about it…again. Wells tells her, “you seem so rational and normal and I’m so confused.” Meanwhile, Ashley knows exactly what’s going on – she tells the camera, “I’m being the most composed version of me ever and Wells enjoys it. That means that I should continue carrying myself with the level-headedness I have right now. Why would I deviate from that if it’s working?”

Then—somehow—things get even more complicated for Wells; two new bachelorettes arrive: Lauren Himle, 26, a kindergarten teacher from Dexter, MI, and “The Bachelor” season 20 (Ben) and Shushanna Mkrtychyan, 28, a mathematician from Salt Lake City, UT and “The Bachelor” season 20 (Ben).

After a few moments of mingling, Lauren and Shushanna invite two men to accompany them on their double date: Lauren invites Brett—who was “with” Izzy, but accepts anyway and Shushanna invites Wells and he accepts—making him the focal point of some bizarre love square.

Week five ended upon many unanswered questions, which will undoubtedly render an epic two-night season finale when “Bachelor In Paradise” returns to ABC on Monday and Tuesday at 8 p.m.
