HOLLYWOOD—Hollywood stars flocked to the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles on January16, for the Golden Globes, the annual first-of-the-season award extravaganza, which many consider an Oscar prophecy. Many tune in to take a glimpse of the A-listers on the red carpet. The ladies this year made the red carpet colorful, sporting many gowns with bold colors, and offbeat shades of salmon and browns. Bare backs and off-the-shoulder dresses were the highlights of the night. We noticed many emerald greens, like the one worn by Angelina Jolie, which was beautiful, backless and bling-less by Atelier Versace. The cameras even caught Miss Jolie touching up her lips with lip gloss at the show, and rearranging Brad Pitt’s bowtie. Another beautiful emerald shoulder-baring gown was worn by Catherine Zeta-Jones. No offense, to Helena Bonham Carter, but did she really wear mismatched shoes purposefully?

One of the highlights of the show is the speeches. So long as they aren’t dragged out, thanking everyone from parents to the mailman. One of the best speeches I heard was from Robert De Niro accepting his Cecil B. DeMille Award; he took off his gloves and managed to throw in some low-blows. The dark humor of host Ricky Gervais turned heads while he threw punches at Charlie Sheen, Mel Gibson, Cher and Bruce Willis just to name a few. I personally don’t think he will be hosting next year.

The big winner was the Facebook tale “The Social Network,” which won four prizes including best drama. The series drama went to “Boardwalk Empire.” The water cooler gossip was about the lawsuit filed days before the show by a former publicist for the Globes alleging that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is involved in “payola” for nominations and awards. The allegations, according to published reports, have been denied by the HFPA, which consists of 82 reporters.

Speaking of reporting, I bumped into Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi who was on tour promoting her first published book titled “A Shore Thing.” Hundreds of fans were lined up to catch a glimpse of fun-size Snooki who stands at 4 feet, 9 inches and now prefers to be called Nicole. Miss Polizzi wants to take Hollywood by storm; she even mentioned she would love to do “Saturday Night Live” and eventually headline her own spin-off show or any show for that matter. She is open to any other possibilities. If you’re a die-hard fan of hers, you’ll love the book; however, if you’re an avid reader who enjoys classic literature, you’ll read the first page and put it down forever. Snooki has even toned down her infamous poof; she’s no longer sporting the beehive look. She wears her black hair pin-straight these days and seems quite happy with her new Italian beau Gianni, who is absolutely gorgeous and is just a few inches taller than her. Her makeup was flawless with a slight tone of bronzer, making her look very natural.

Rose’s Scoop: Miss Nebraska, 17-year-old Teresa Scanlan, took home the Miss America crown on January 15, making her the youngest Miss America. The show was held in Las Vegas, no longer in Atlantic City, N.J.
