HOLLYWOOD—The Hollywood glamour was in full swing on the red carpet for the Golden Globe Awards that took place on January 11. These celebrities have been dieting for months, working out, especially doing arm exercises with hand weights. I repeat, no one wants to see bingo wings flapping when you lift the award.

The Golden Globes officially started the 2015 awards season, which will last until the Academy Awards. This year the attention was focused on the face of George Clooney’s wife, Amal Clooney. Her face was priceless, it seemed she was extremely bored and couldn’t wait to get home and change. Compared to last year the awards show dropped, the three-hour telecast averaged 16.1 million viewers.

That’s down from last year’s 19.3 million viewers. Throughout the evening, the celebrities expressed solidarity after the deadly attack on French magazine Charlie Hebdo and called for freedom of expression to be protected. Third-time hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler opened with a joke about the cyberattack on Sony Pictures.

From Hollywood to Zurich, Portuguese superstar soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo won the FIFA Ballon d’Or award for the second consecutive year. So, the best man won. There was glitz and glamour in Zurich, as well. After a stellar 12 months, he was crowned the 2014 Ballon d’Or winner live on January 12. The 29-year-old has it all, talents, looks and a heart of gold. Winning the award is like winning an Oscar for film. Ronaldo was surrounded by his immediate family, his mother, step-dad, and his son Cristiano Jr. Missing from the awards show was Ronaldo’s girlfriend Irina Shayk who was vacationing in the Maldives. He was running against Lionel Messi, Manuel Neuer for the title. Messi, meanwhile, won four years in a row from 2009 to 2012. Somewhat of a personal rivalry, Ronaldo topped the voting in 2008, 2013 and 2014.

In his acceptance speech, he said he wanted to become “one of the greatest players of all time.” He seemed a bit nervous with his acceptance speech, when he said: “I would like to thank all of those who voted for me, my president, my coach and Real Madrid. It has been an unforgettable year. To win this trophy at the end of it is something incredibly unique.” He also thanked his mother, son and his father “who is up there looking at me. I want to thank you all,” concluded the Real Madrid star before leaving the stage with a loud roar. A very moving acceptance speech. Ronaldo has come a long way from when he played youth football at Nacional before joining Sporting Lisbon in 2002.

The Real Madrid forward poll more than doubled the number of votes than his opponents. Ronaldo is considered (the pretty boy of Portugal) and was forgiven for a disappointing World Cup in 2014, with Portugal going out in the first round. The award is voted in by national team captains, coaches and journalists
