HOLLYWOOD—Many suspected the sequel to “The Hunger Games” to do big business at the box-office, but not this big. “Catching Fire” dazzled audiences this weekend with a stellar $161.1 million dollar gross at the box-office. No other film had a chance of competing with the powerhouse, I mean between the success of the first film and the books, it was a given. The movie sets a record for the best November debut ever, toppling the record recently set by “The Twilight Saga: New Moon.”
The picture opened to a little over $70 million on Friday, and saw those numbers increase throughout the weekend. Blow away by nearly $150 million, was the Vince Vaughn dramedy “The Delivery Man” which brought in a measly sum of around $8 million. Personally, it’s a good flick, but would have been better suited to open this coming Thanksgiving weekend for older audiences.
“Thor: The Dark World” continues to do good business at theaters taking the #2 spot by adding another $14.2 million to its total, after nearly three weeks the picture is well over the $150 million mark domestically. Landing in third was last weekend’s surprise “The Best Man Holiday” which took in a little over $12 million. The sequel thus far has grossed over $50 million at the domestic box-office. It sure looks like “Catching Fire” will continue to dominate the box-office this coming week, as “Black Nativity” and Disney’s “Frozen” arrives.
Both movies will cater to distinct audiences, but the power of “Catching Fire” will be too much for either of those films to nab the #1 spot.
