HOLLYWOOD—When it comes to celebrity diet secrets, there isn’t anything most of us wouldn’t do to get a taste of the same weight loss success that most celebrities have. There are certainly many celebrity diet secrets out there that do promote effective weight loss, you just need to find the one that fits your lifestyle and is actually healthy.
When you see celebrities like Cameron Diaz’s slim silhouette or Jessica Alba or Kim Kardashian’s flat post pregnancy tummy you wonder just how the stars stay so lean or snap back into shape so quickly. While many swear their svelte bods come from eating healthy and exercising round the clock, the truth is that some celebs go to bizarre and interesting lengths to get or stay pin thin.
Here is the skinny on exactly what the big names do to get into movie roles and red-carpet ready. Remember we watched the bronzed and buffed Matthew McConaughey waste away into a painfully thin version of 135 pounds by adopting a liquid-only diet for his role in “The Dallas Buyers Club.” The crazy diet of Ashton Kutcher when he ate only fruit to imitate the eating habits of Steve Jobs-causing him to be hospitalized for pancreas problems just days before he began shooting “Jobs.”
Actress Anne Hathaway used a 500 calorie-per day diet of hummus and radishes to drop pounds to play the role of Fantine in the “Les Mis” remake. She also according to published reports, lived off of “kale and dust” to lose weight for her role in Catwoman in “The Dark Knight Rises.”
Actress Natalie Portman slimmed down (as if she really needed it) with a grueling 5 to 8 hours of ballet training each day for her role in “Black Swan.” She also reportedly told the Daily Mail, that she barely ate. Beyonce lost weight for her role as Deena Jones in “Dreamgirls” by using the Master Cleanse diet. That’s the diet that consists of a mixture of lime and lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper that is added to water. She also ate vegetables, but hardly consumed anything else. Jennifer Hudson in her role in “Winnie,” joined Weight Watchers and followed such a strict diet that she shed over 80 pounds in an extremely disciplined approach.
Actor Christian Bale lost an extreme amount of weight for the film “The Machinist” in 2004 by following a strict diet that consisted of coffee, water, tuna and an apple each day. The incredible transformation also included a vigorous exercise regime. Bale went from 173 pounds down to 110 pounds. He wanted to lose more, however, producers stepped in and refused to let him.
Another actor was Matt Damon for his role in “Courage Under Fire,” where he ran 6.5 miles in the morning and at night ate nothing but a chicken breast, a plain baked potato and egg whites each day. Extreme, but effective.
Who could forget Tom Hanks back in 2000, in the film “Castaway.” Hanks managed to lose 55 pounds for his Academy Award-winning role in the movie. He did it for anther role in 1993 as AIDS patient Andrew Beckett in “Philadelphia.” Colin Farrell basically starved himself for his role in “Triage” in 2009. He told Access Hollywood he did chow down on two big Macs during his three-months in shooting….and didn’t eat for two or three days on either side of that.
Daniel Day Lewis for his role in “In The Name of the Father,” lost weight using the minimal food or rather prison rations in a jail cell. He also slept in the same cell for three nights in a twisted and bizarre commitment to the role.
This is nothing new for Hollywood, these extreme diets have been used by actors decades ago. Actor Orson Welles in his iconic role, actually gained weight to play the older Citizen Kane. However, to drop the 50 pounds to play his younger character, he stuck to an extreme diet of only orange juice, boiled eggs and salads for an entire month. This is the world of Hollywood, where sometimes actors have to go through extremes. After all, these Hollywood actors are getting paid mega money to pretend they’re someone else, so when the role calls for super skinny, a good actor has to make him or herself look like they fit the bill.
Rose’s Scoop: Actress Yvonne Craig, who played Batgirl in the 1960s “Batman” TV series died at the age of 78. She also starred in two movies opposite Elvis Presley, “It Happened at the World’s Fair” and “Kissin’ Cousins.” Presley died on August 16, 1977, this year marked the 38th anniversary of his death.
