MALIBU—The City of Malibu is informing residents that the next installment of Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training course, a series of eight emergency preparedness classes will start Thursday evenings beginning on September 18 and run through November 20.

The classes are presented by the City of Malibu and the Los Angeles County Fire Department.  According to the City of Malibu website, classes will run from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Malibu City Hall building located at 23825 Stuart Ranch Road. Classes will be cancelled on September 25 and October 23.

The CERT program was created in 1985 by the Los Angeles City Fire Department to provide basic training in safety and lifesaving skills to the public. It has been updated and adopted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the National Fire Academy.

It is recognized all over the country and has been responsible for training 50,000 citizens to date. The CERT classes will discuss the following materials:

-Disaster Preparedness
-Fire Suppression
-Medical Class #1
-Medical Class #2
-Light Search and Rescue
-Terrorism
-Team Organization and Disaster Psychology
-Course Review and Disaster Simulation Drill
