SANTA MONICA—The city of Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce hosted firefighters, police officers, and educators on Wednesday, October 19, as part of an event called New Heroes Celebration, which honors those pioneering positive change within Santa Monica.

The event was an opportunity for community members, local businesses, and city leaders to acknowledge and celebrate the work of both novice and veteran heroes. Each year “Inspirational Heroes are honored with an award acknowledging their contributions to the community and serving as an inspiration for those newest heroes to follow,” states the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce’s official webpage for the event.

Among the award winning recipients for the 2016 Inspirational Hero Reward were Captain Wendell Shirley and Tish Tisherman of the Santa Monica Police Department; SMMUSD student, Jacob Hammersly; and the Early Learning Pathways Program of the SMMUSD — which was was recognized for its contributions to the Santa Monica community.

In addition to celebrating and awarding individuals for their achievements within Santa Monica, the event gave local businesses a chance to showcase their services to those in attendance.

Leslie Silverstein, the Program Manager of the Early Childhood Parenting Center said in a statement, “I wanted to thank [the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce] for including us at [their] recent ‘Heroes Event’ and allowing ECPC to have a booth there. I met some wonderful people and it was good exposure for our Early Childhood Parenting Center.”
