SANTA MONICA—The Canadian Women’s National Soccer Team have set their sights on Santa Monica while they prepare for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The team is expected to arrive on May 8 and will utilize Airport Park as a temporary practice space while prepping for pre-World Cup scrimmages and friendlies.

Eric Johnson, a program supervisor in Santa Monica’s Community Recreation Division, said the team reached out to him after news that their match against Mexico’s national team would take place in Carson, California. The team needed a place to practice before the game and Santa Monica’s rec centers were happy to oblige. Johnson speculated the team will remain in Santa Monica for at least a week.

Children and adults are welcome to watch them practice on Sunday, May 10 at 3:30 p.m., where kids can get some tips and meet the players while they train on the Airport Park field. The team’s match against Mexico will be held on Sunday, May 17 at the StubHub Center in Carson.
