SHERMAN OAKS—A crossing guard passed away at a hospital after being struck by a vehicle Monday, September 16 in the Valley Glen area.

At about 7:20 a.m. Delia Huerta Arrearan, 57, was hit by a silver sedan as she was walking with a teenage student across the 13400 block of West Vanowen Street. This collision transpired during normal school drop-off hours and streets were closed for hours after the collision.

Huerta Arrearan was transported to a hospital by ambulance and passed away about 5:40 p.m. 10 hours after she was admitted.

The 16 year-old student was also hit by the same vehicle and was transported to the hospital by emergency vehicle. Her injuries are considered not life threatening.

The motorist remained at the scene to be interviewed by police and was arrested. The motorist was not reported to have any injuries from the collision.

“We’re devastated by the loss of Delia Huerta Arrearan. Every day, she gave parents peace of mind, helping kids get to school safely,” Mayor Eric Garcetti said in a tweet, “She will be missed by @LADOTofficial & the communities she served. Ordering City flags to half-staff as we honor her & send love to her family.”

Delia Huerta Arrearana was a Sun Valley resident who worked for the Department of Transportation for more than a decade. LADOT stated in a tweet, “Delia Huerta Arrearan helped countless children and families get to and from school every day as a member of our crossing guard program since 2006 and will be deeply missed. Our deepest condolences go out to her family and loved ones.”

LADOT will be providing grief counseling to all LADOT employees impacted by the death of Huerta Arrearana. They are also working with LAUSD to provide services to her school community as well.
