SANTA MONICA—On Tuesday, August 6, David Carrillo, 33, was sentenced to 16 years to life in state prison for the murder of a man in 2015 outside a fast-food restaurant in South Los Angeles.

According to officials, Carrillo fatally stabbed Wesley Morejon, 30, who according to prosecutors he met in a substance abuse program, with a folding knife outside of the fast-food restaurant in the 8900 block of Vermont Avenue. The incident was the result of a argument that led to a fight on February 10, 2015.

Two weeks after the murder, the defendant barricaded himself inside a Santa Monica apartment on the 800 block of Ocean Park Boulevard for nearly five hours. His arrest was successful with the help of a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department police dog, were tear gas was used to coax him out of the apartment.

According to evidence presented at the trial, Carrillo and Morejon knew each other from a substance abuse program they both attended.

On May 21, Deputy District Attorney Mike Bauer found Carrillo guilty on of one count of second-degree murder.
