BEVERLY HILLS—After a bit of a delay, the contenders for the biggest accolade in the entertainment industry were announced on Thursday, January 23 from the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre.

The contenders were announced by “Bodies, Bodies and Bodies” actress Rachel Sennott and “Saturday Night Live” star Bowen Yang. The So who would be the big juggernaut of the season? Would it be “Anora,” “Wicked,” “The Brutalist” or “Emilia Perez?” When the dust settled it was “Emilia Perez” that dominated with 13 nominations. “Wicked” earned 10 nominations, as well as “The Brutalist,” while “A Complete Unknown” picked up 8 nods.

Were there snubs? You betcha. No Denzel Washington, no Selena Gomez, no Jamie Lee Curtis and no Danielle Deadwyler.  Many were already on the fence, but with the Screen Actors Guild nominating Deadwyler and Curtis, I expected they MIGHT make the cut.

The Best Director race is an interesting one with the inclusion of James Mangold and Coralie Fargeat for “A Complete Unknown” and “The Substance.” Coralie is the only female competing in that group of men, and that movie is generating some serious buzz. Angelina Jolie and Nicole Kidman didn’t make the cut for Best Actress for their performances for “Maria” or “Babygirl” which tells you just how competitive things were this season.
