LOS ANGELES—On Wednesday, June 10, law enforcement officials updated the public with news regarding the massive celebrity photo hack that took place last year. Photos included nude and explicit content that were stolen from many individual’s personal Apple iCloud storage. Victims included Jennifer Lawrence and Kate Upton, among other celebrities.
Computers were recently seized by FBI officials because they were found to be possible links. Emilio Herrera of Chicago is the main source of investigation, and his home was seized for possible connections that he may have had with the leaking of the photos.
While it’s uncertain how Herrera is connected to the scandal, Gawker, an online gossip community, pinpointed Herrera in connection with the incident and pegs his house as the source of the iCloud hacking.
While the investigation is still ongoing and no charges have been officially made, possible charges for Herrera may include conspiracy and computer fraud. While both are serious crimes, other charges could include email fraud, wire fraud, and copyright infringement, as well as invasion of privacy.
If Herrera is responsible for the hack, he would have illegally accessed iCloud accounts nearly 4,000 times and hacked up to 500 private iCloud accounts.
