HOLLYWOOD—There were plenty of new releases at the box-office this weekend, but they were unable to dethrone last week’s titans “Venom” and “A Star is Born.” “Venom” maintained its grip on audiences with $35.7 million to remain on top at the box-office. After 10 days in theaters, the comic book adventure has already earned over $142 million at the domestic box-office and is certain to reach $150 million by mid-week. The buzz surrounding “A Star is Born” is huge as it added another $28 million to its tally to remain in second place in theaters.
After 2 weeks, the film is just mere millions from crossing the $100 million mark at the domestic box-office. Landing in third place was the biopic “First Man” starring Ryan Gosling, chronicling the tale of astronaut Neil Armstrong. The buzz behind the flick was strong, but audiences were not impressed as the drama earned a meek $16.5 million. I suspect the movie will not have strong legs in theaters. Debuting in fourth place was the sequel “Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween” with $16.2 million. That is much lower than its predecessor which earned over $23 million during opening weekend in 2015.
Rounding out the top five was the animated flick “Smallfoot” with $9.3 million. Another new releases with lackluster debuts included “Bad Times At The El Royale” which landed in seventh place with a dismal $7.2 million. The drama “The Hate U Give” debuted in ninth place with $1.8 million. Which is not bad considering the film is only showing in 245 theaters. “Venom” and “A Star is Born” will take a hit in theaters this coming weekend as the hotly anticipated “Halloween” is unleashed, 40 years after the original first hit theaters. Projections have the flick have the highest debut of all film in the franchise with a possible $50 million plus opening.
