SHERMAN OAKS—A Sherman Oaks middle school and its magnets re-opened on Friday, October 18 after the Los Angeles Unified School District detected a gas leak near the front of the campus.

Robert A. Millikan Middle School’s principal, who was still on campus for a PTA meeting Wednesday, October 16 smelled the scent of gas and contacted the district workers. District workers made a report to So Cal Gas company after they received notification from the principal. According to the LAUSD the school’s gas service was turned off while repairs were being made.

LAUSD announced in a tweet, “Millikan MS and its magnets are closed today, Oct. 17. Last night, the Gas Company & Los Angeles Unified crews detected a gas leak near the front of the school. Gas service has been shut off while repairs are being made. Out of an abundance of caution, the school is closed today.” The school cancelled classes for 1,730 students Thursday.

Maintenance crews remained onsite to complete additional work, while school was in session on Friday.
