HOLLYWOOD HILLS—Academy Award winner Goldie Hawn and actor Kurt Russell were honored on Thursday, May 4 with what many consider to be Tinseltown’s most emblematic tribute — a sidewalk star along Hollywood Boulevard’s legendary “Walk of Fame.”
In a street-side, public ceremony hosted by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce (curators of the famous walk), long-time couple Hawn and Russell were each presented with a star in recognition of their illustrious show business careers. The two were joined by Academy Award winning director Quentin Tarentino and actress Reese Witherspoon, who spoke on behalf of each of the recipients. Hawn’s daughter Kate Hudson also spoke.
An emotional Witherspoon described the profound influence Hawn had on her career. “She is an icon. She is a legend. She is true movie star. I took the role of Elle Woods because of Goldie.” Witherspoon said. “She’s changed my life, and quite simply, she’s my idol.”
“Did we just get married?” Hawn joked to longtime beau Russell as she took the stage to applause. She told the crowd that she came to Hollywood to be a dancer, not a movie star. “I really wanted to have a normal life.” Hawn reminisced, “even though my dad told me I wasn’t normal.” Hawn also spoke of the insecurities she experienced trying to define herself when confronted with stardom, and the importance of being open to new opportunities in life. “Everything we do in our life, all of us, by just saying ‘yes’, can lead us to that star.”
“Today, I’m reminded of how lucky I am.” Russell said as he opened his remarks. He thanked his family and the thousands of people he worked with over his career, from studio executives to makeup artists, before turning to address Hawn. “To you, I owe my wonderful life,” Russell told the blushing actress. “If I’m to be trod upon by the soles of shoes caked with earth from all corners of the globe, there’s no one else I’d rather be next to for all of that, than Goldie Hawn.”
Russell and Hawn are the 2,609th and 2,610th icons to receive stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Russell currently stars in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” which opened on May 5, while Goldie Hawn co-stars with Amy Schumer in the comedy “Snatched” which opens on Friday, May 12.
