HOLLYWOOD—It was two thrillers fighting for the top spot at the box-office this weekend. In one corner there was the Gillian Flynn beloved novel “Gone Girl” starring Ben Affleck versus that creepy doll from “Annabelle” that wanted to win over theater goers.

So who came out on top? It was “Gone Girl” which surpassed expectations with a hefty $38 million. That’s a strong debut for an R-rated movie. In fact, both films which were rated-R brought in more than $75 million in box-office receipts. “Annabelle” was no box-office flop, bringing in around $37 million in its debut weekend. Not many expected the horror flick to bring in big bucks, but “The Conjuring” proved to have plenty of fans who wanted to learn the origin tale of the creepy object.

Falling to the #3 spot was last week’s champ, “The Equalizer” which brought in just under $20 million. So in just two weeks, Denzel Washington’s action-ride has earned over $60 million. The animated flick “The Boxtrolls” brought some fun for the kiddies with just over $12 million. Rounding out the top five was “The Maze Runner” that earned just around $12 million.

This weekend sees the release of another horror flick as the story “Dracula: Untold” is unleashed to audiences.
