HOLLYWOOD—Thrills and chills were evident at the box-office this weekend, but it might not have been the scares that box-office prognosticators suspects. The adaptation of the popular book series “Goosebumps” made its big-screen debut to an impressive $23.5 million to land in first place. “Goosebumps” knocked two-week champion “The Martian” to second place with $21.5 million. Ridley Scott’s space adventure is proving to be a hit with moviegoers, and is only a mere $7 million from crossing the $150 million mark at the domestic box-office.
Steven Spielberg’s dramatic thriller “Bridge of Spies” starring Tom Hanks landed in third place with $15.4 million. The film which is considered a strong contender this awards season is buzzing with critics and moviegoers. With Halloween less than 2 weeks away, many expected “Crimson Peak” to earn higher numbers this weekend, but debuted to only $12.9 million. Hopefully, audiences head to the multiplex in the next 2 weeks to help the $150 million flick not turn into a flop.
Rounding out the top five was the animated flick “Hotel Transylvania 2” with an additional $12.5 million to its tally. After more than a month in theaters, the sequel will likely cross the $150 million mark within the next week or two. This week the scares REALLY arrive with the sixth installment in the “Paranormal Activity” franchise with “Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension.”
