HOLLYWOOD—Buying a home for the first time or making renovations to your current home can be intimidating if you have no idea what you are doing. Purchasing that dream home is something many of us contemplate until that magical moment occurs, but making improvements to your home can be an even more daunting task. The cable network HGTV (Home and Garden Television) provides every possible detail anyone would need to know to ensure a renovation doesn’t turn into a disaster.

Viewers who tune into the network are provided an array of topics, which include what to look for when purchasing your first home, cost they may incur from renovations done to a kitchen or bathroom, catching errors done to your home while it was being worked on or perhaps discovering how much homes from various parts of the region can actually cost. HGTV is your go-to guide to make your home as comfortable and lavish as possible.

Take a look at “Holmes on Homes,” which is a show that follows contractor Mike Holmes as he visits residences that have problems due to renovations done by other contractors. Holmes points out problems and provides the viewer with insight on what to look for if you are having someone work on your home; you want to make sure that you get the best quality work. He knows his stuff and can save a homeowner from total disaster with a few tips; he even fixes the problems that were left unfinished.

For those viewers, including myself, who enjoy the idea of seeing fabulous homes and people make tough decisions on which is the best choice for them, you don’t want to miss “House Hunters.”  This show is a hoot to watch. Home buyers look at three different houses chosen by a Realtor, and then they weigh the pros and cons of each house including cost, square footage and amenities. As a viewer, you get in on the fun, by guessing which house you think the house hunters will choose. It allows the audience to really see the choices that are weighed when buying a home.

Anyone looking to purchase property in the Big Apple will enjoy “Selling New York.”  I’ve always known how expensive it is to live in New York, but this show really informs the public that property in NYC isn’t cheap. The premise of the show revolves around real estate brokers from three variousManhattan companies who attempt to sell property to New York’s privileged.

If you’re more into interior design then you’ll appreciate “Color Splash” hosted by David Bromstad. The concept of the series is to show the public how you can breathe fresh life into any room in a home with a few colors.  I’ll admit I’m not an avid fan of super bright colors in a house, it attracts too much attention in my opinion, but I appreciate the idea. It’s amazing to see a living room go from blah to wow with a few color palettes.

Now for those homeowners who are looking to make renovations to their home in order to increase the overall value, look no further than “Bang For Your Buck.” This is another favorite of mine. It’s great to see the improvements people make to their bathrooms or kitchens to increase the value. I’m a kitchen person myself, so if I’m buying a home, the kitchen is the first thing that’s going to catch my attention.  The show takes three homeowners from the same city, and they decide to renovate a particular room in the house.  The renovation can be an array of things from specific countertops, backsplashes, wood floors, tile or ceramic and many more. After the renovation has been completed, experts come in and weigh which homeowner will receive a bigger return on their investment based on the choices made. This is truly an interesting way to discover re-sale value for your home.

While HGTV may not be everyone’s cup of tea when it comes to entertainment, anyone who owns a home, those looking to purchase a home or make renovations to their home can learn vital information. That information not only affects your finances but your safety. As a viewer, you may tune into one show on the network and find yourself eight hours later watching everything else and learning along the way!
