HOLLYWOOD—A film written and directed by “Glee” creator Ryan Murphy, “Eat Pray Love” is filled with great costumes, amazing leading men, a leading lady we all love on screen, and lavish settings. The film rushes through the beginning a bit too much. Those who have read the famous novel expect to see a more broody and dark version of Liz Gilbert, played by Oscar-winner Julia Roberts, but Liz’s mood in the beginning of the film is not delved into enough by writers. It leaves a small hole in the structure of the ongoing story. Otherwise, the writing is rich and melancholy, the two things moviegoers love most in romantic comedies and dramas.

James Franco and Javier Bardem are sensational on the screen with Roberts. It’s difficult to choose which leading man is best for her. However, both shine in this film, and when Franco appears on the big screen there is almost a gasp coming from the audience due to his charismatic performance in “Eat Pray Love.” Perhaps it is the fact that we do not see too much of Julia Roberts on the big screen, that her enigmatic personality and vigor is welcoming and exciting to watch? She took a mediocre plot and turned the film into gold. It’s certainly not an Oscar-worthy storyline, but it’s definitely an Oscar-worthy performance by the leading lady and James Franco.

This film was almost like watching the old Walt Disney Show on Sunday nights 40 years ago. The locales were so exciting and captivating. Julia Roberts proves she’s still the biggest female star in Hollywood.

“Eat Pray Love” receives Four of Five Stars from this reviewer. The film opens on Friday, August 13, nationally.
