MALIBU—A deadly traffic collision on Kanan Dume Road occurred on Tuesday, December 2. This happened just one week after three passengers suffered critical injuries when their car veered off the same road and plunged into a steep embankment.

Describing the incident, Sheriff Lieutenant John Lecrivain told Canyon News, “A passenger vehicle driven by one occupant collided with an Edison work truck.” This occurred at 3:54 p.m. Lecrivian added, “the male driver was pronounced dead at the scene.” The driver of the Edison truck, however, was uninjured.

The incident happened during a rainstorm and the driver was allegedly driving too fast when he took a sharp turn, lost control of his vehicle and crashed into the truck. Lecrivian mentioned therefore that “the initial causal factors were determined to be speed and rain.”

Los Angeles County Search and Rescue teams arrived immediately to search for other passengers who were potentially thrown form their vehicle into the canyon to the side. No such passengers existed.

Kanan Dume Road remained closed for four hours as authorities responded to the deadly crash.

Kanan Dume Road has been proven to be an unsafe highway. In addition to last week’s plunge, which caused critical injuries to three passengers, in a similar incident on October 14, the passengers of a car traveling northbound on the winding highway were airlifted after their car, too, dove into the canyon.

Sergeant Lecrivian wanted to advise passengers on Kanan Dume Road to “drive within your limits; if it’s raining, wet or if there is traffic, slow down; to wear a safety belt; and to use common sense.”
