BEVERLY HILLS – Boys and girls performed for their peers and parents at a special showcase at the Beverly Vista Auditorium on May 8.

Canyon News spoke with Heather Sumagaysay from the City of Beverly Hills via email about the event. Sumagaysay indicated that the event is an ongoing afterschool program. She added that once school starts back in the fall, it will re-open for registration.

For more than seven weeks, 13 kids between the ages of 10-12 participated in advanced ballroom classes that were taught after-school hours by Jenny Meidlinger. The fifth-grade students from Beverly Vista School learned new dances each week including the Merengue, Fox Trot, Tango, Swing, Salsa and Cha Cha Cha.

“Dancing is a great way to boost self-confidence, increase social interaction, and encourage kids to be happier and healthier,” says Beverly Hills Recreation Supervisor Chris Best. “It was a lot of fun to see students work together as a team to learn different ballroom dances and the advanced steps involved with each.”
