WOODLAND HILLS—The Ability First Paul Weston Work Center, formerly known as the Crippled Children’s Society Rehabilitation Center, is in trouble of closing its doors permanently.

The facility, which was built by American architect John Lautner in 1979, could be transformed to an 81-unit assisted living facility. The building is currently located on 6530 Winnetka Ave.

Lautner specifically designed the building with details from Mary Jane Moore, who was the center’s director at the time. Preservationists have been fighting to keep the building reserved as an architectural gem.

The facility caters to adults who are physically or developmentally challenged, to obtain job skills in the workforce.
