LONG BEACH—As of last year hearing, hard of hearing and deaf students have attempted to start an ASL Club in the Liberal Arts Campus of Long Beach City College. Two separate clubs were attempted to be formed: one for the deaf and hard of hearing and the other only for the hearing students.
These students attempted to petition to form these clubs, but were told they did not have enough people interested.
According to Deborah Hamm, ASL instructor on the campus, “This will be a club for folks studying ASL – they could be deaf, but [it] gives students a place to practice ‘risk free.'” Students are waiting to hope enough people show interest in order to complete the next process to become a club.
LBCC club rules state that new clubs must have at least 10 to 20 people minimum in order to start a club. Professors cannot sponsor the club into unless it has reached its minimum members, only then can a professor be an advisor.
There is no word yet on how many people have signed up or who the advisor may be. Students must now wait to create Club Constitution that is in compliance with the California Education Code, ASB Constitution and the policies of Senate/Club Board.
