Leaders In The Arts, Compelling TV

HOLLYWOOD —The Leaders in the Arts this week include three shows that have made compelling storylines over the last few years that made the industry, fans and viewers pay attention and have discussion around the water cooler. Perhaps the most shocking and most recent storyline was on SHO’s award winning drama “Dexter.” When Dexter’s wife was killed on the season finale. The fact that Dexter’s criminal life could be kept away from his family was one of the delusions Dexter had for years. Now he realizes that being a serial killer himself, and hiding it from his family and continuing to hunt the Trinity Killer put his family and ultimately his wife in the path of another madman, one that was more lethal than himself.

This will bring the next season of “Dexter” to an entirely different level of drama. It’s simply going to bring Dexter to a fever pitch and it was the writing and acting of this series that makes it compelling television and is why fans are so enthralled in the life of the protagonist named Dexter.

“True Blood” has been a lightning rod of controversy since the first episode. However, the most compelling story to date on the series is the love affair between human Sookie Stackhouse and vampire Bill Compton. Bill is perhaps the most civilized of the vamps and the fact is their relationship is as controversial in the sleepy town of Bon Temps as interracial marriages and relationships were 30 years ago in the same region in America.

Proof of the show’s cult classic status is the fan base this series has achieved. Trubies are millions strong and although each character has his or her key group of supporters, all of Alan Ball’s brilliant storylines have been met with great anticipation and admiration.

“The Bold and the Beautiful” is the most successful TV show on the air. One of the most successful in television history. Bradley P. Bell can find compelling dramatic storylines on a regular basis. Who’d ever forget when beloved hero Ridge shot and killed his daughter’s stalker and then instead of turning himself in, he weighed the body down, put it in the ocean, then allowed his half-brother to be blamed for it. Bradley wrote the storyline in a way that made us rethink how we look at Ridge. That’s what the magnificent producer and head writer is able to do on a regular basis.

How did Ridge get off? In came uber defense attorney Christine Blair from “Y&R” and Genoa City and we all knew Christine would get her client off. Christine’s the Johnny Cochran of lawyers in soapdom and Lauralee Bell, one of the most beautiful and truly most talented of actresses of the post golden era of Hollywood.

“B&B” “Dexter” and “True Blood” incorporate amazing characters with groundbreaking storytelling and talented actors to make TV as compelling today as it was in the ”˜60s when Miss Kitty ran a whorehouse in Dodge City on “Gunsmoke” and these shows make us question and care about the characters like during the 1980s Who Shot J.R. Ewing on “Dallas” and Will Krystle and Alexis live or die on “Dynasty.”

“True Blood” airs on HBO, “Dexter” on SHO and “The Bold and the Beautiful” on CBS.
