STUDIO CITY—A fatal collision occurred on the Southbound 101 Freeway at Vineland Avenue on April 3. Joong Kim, 70, from Bell Canyon slammed his 2008 Lexus under a big rig carrying flowers, which slowed down as a result of another collision that had happened south of Vineland.

Leland Tang, the California Highway Control spokesman, said that when this accident occurred, “The 101 eastbound to the Hollywood Freeway southbound transition was closed, with traffic diverted to the 134 Freeway. Southbound traffic along the 170 Freeway was also diverted to the eastbound 134 Freeway.”

Los Angeles City Fire Heavy Rescue responded, extricating the driver and removing the Lexus from the trailer. Authorities declared Kim dead on the site. The driver of the big rig, a 50-year-old man from Oxnard whose name was not released, came out of the accident with no injuries. Tang explains, “He probably barely felt it. It was probably like a thunk.” Following investigation at the scene, all lanes reopened at 6:38 a.m.
