WEST HOLLYWOOD—On September 16, at 5:45 a.m., a lone motorist driving an SUV just south of Santa Monica Boulevard, hit a tree in front of West Hollywood Volvo at 1040 N. La Brea.
The site is across the street to the east of Target and Best Buy in the West Hollywood Gateway Complex. The Sherriff’s Department confirmed that the driver was moving northbound on La Brea when the accident occurred.
The driver was declared dead on the scene. The accident caused La Brea to be closed for an estimated 90 minutes. The Los Angeles Coroner’s Office identified the driver of the vehicle as Darrell K. Mervin, 49, a resident of Los Angeles.
Mervin’s Mitsubishi Montero also hit and smashed Southern California Edison power equipment, but no outages were reported after the incident.
