SANTA MONICA—A man was decapitated after he used a rope to commit suicide in a Santa Monica parking garage on Wednesday, September 5.

Officers from the Santa Monica Police Department were called to the scene at 12:40 p.m. The incident occurred on the seventh floor of a parking structure located on the 1300 block of Second Street, near the 3rd Street Promenade.

The SMPD issued a warning via Twitter informing people to steer clear of the area as they investigated the scene. “All pedestrian and vehicular traffic has been blocked off from Broadway to Colorado Blvd,” tweeted the SMPD. Officers stated that no foul play was involved.

Several witnesses also took to Twitter to share what they saw during the incident. @Baby_Girls_16 tweeted, “I just saw someone jump off a building in #SantaMonica I pray that his family finds peace.” @KPSaurusRex tweeted that she saw the victim’s head and helicopters circling the building shortly after.

Earlier that day, an attempted suicide occurred at the 1500 block of Fifth Street, where a man climbed a tree and was throwing branches down threatening to hurt himself. Officers were able to safely get the individual down before he was taken into custody.
