SANTA MONICA—Kelvin Melvin Green of Los Angeles entered a plea of guilty on July 11 for killing his wife on August 21, 2011. Green was potentially facing the death penalty. He will serve 75 years to life in jail as a result of the plea.

The suspect walked into the Albertson’s store located at 3105 Wilshire Blvd,Santa Monica, where his wife was busy working at the cash register. He walked up to her, whispered something, and began stabbing her. He stabbed her a total of 41 times in the head, face, and upper torso.

According to a press release, store patrons tried to stop Green by throwing merchandise at him, but failed to stop him. After the incident, Green walked out of the store, entered his vehicle and drove away. The store employees were able to recognize Green since the couple had a strained relationship.

The Santa Monica police were able to recover the murder weapon, which was thrown away nearby. Police tracked Green and made an arrest the following day. According to a criminal complaint, he was convicted of robbery in 1985 in which he used a deadly weapon.
