SANTA MONICA—The suspect who barricaded himself in a Santa Monica apartment after killing a man outside of a hamburger restaurant has been charged with murder. David Carrillo, 28, pleaded not guilty to one count of murder with an allegation that he used a knife to commit the murder of Wesley Morejon, 30, on February 10.

The fast-food establishment was located on the 8900 block of Vermont Ave in South Los Angeles. Carrillo was arrested by police on February 21 with the assistance of a Los Angeles Sheriff’s police dog after he locked himself in an apartment for close to five hours.

According to the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office, the suspect is expected back in court on April 21. Bail for Carrillo was set at $1 million. If convicted, he faces a maximum life sentence behind bars.
