PASADENA—The Stanford Cardinals won the 102nd Rose Bowl as Heisman trophy runner-up Christian McCaffrey demoralized the Iowa defense by setting an all time Rose Bowl record with a electrifying 368 yards, as he led Stanford to a 45-16 victory.

Over 94,000 witnessed the game, which was basically over by the end of the first quarter as Stanford took a 21-0 lead. A foreshadowing of things to come happened on only the first play from scrimmage when Christian McCaffrey took a quick pass and ran 75 yards untouched into the end zone.

Things only got worse for the Iowa Hawkeyes as the Cardinals set another record with a 35-0 lead going into halftime. Quarterback Kevin Hogan finished his Stanford career with his second Rose Bowl victory. This was a game in which McCaffrey scored on a running touchdown, a pass play, and returned a punt for a touchdown as well.

Stanford Coach David Shaw said of his star player, “At halftime he was mad that he didn’t score another touchdown, he will come out ready in the second half.”

He certainly was as was the rest of the PAC-12 champs as they continued their remarkable run as a perennial powerhouse, and a team that will certainly make a run for the National Championship next season. Iowa fans were clearly in the majority, and left disappointed after traveling so many miles. Iowa resident Kyle Winston from Des Moines, said that, “It was fun to visit Disneyland and the weather is beautiful, but this game isn’t” as he tried to have a good time in spite of the game’s outcome.

Mother nature complied as usual with a stunning backdrop of the San Gabriel Mountains and picture perfect day. This marks Stanford’s seventh time that they have won the “Granddaddy of them all.”
